Travel (2020 - 2022)
The travel flag aims to see pupils walking, cycling, scooting or carpooling to school where possible. The school has participated in The BIG Travel Challenge during the month of February which saw 80% of the pupils traveling to school without the use of the car most days! The pupils have had cycling lessons from Chiara Hanrahan the Green Schools Travel Officer. We have also begun or no IDLING campaign which aims to bring about changes in community practices in relation to idling our cars. The children have learned about the negative effects of idling on the environment, air quality and their parents pockets! Take a look below at some of the image from our work so far this year.
The Big Travel Challenge
Our Big Travel Challenge was a huge success. There was a significant increase in the number of children cycling to school over the ten day period. Our numbers rose from 0-2 pupils cycling to 20/25 cycling on some days. Well done to all the children, parents and teachers who took part in the initiative.
No IDLING Campaign
Not only did we achieve the Travel Flag for our little school, we also got awarded one of only three Cycle School of the Year awards for taking part in the Green Schools Big Travel Challenge.
Our four 6th class pupils along with Ms. Brennan and Ms. McCabe travelled to Dublin to collect the award.
A bright and sunny day on the 25th of May allowed us to raise our newest green flag. Ms. Brennan along with councillor Tommy Kinsella raised it with great pride. As a special treat for all the hard work put in to earn the flag, our brilliant parents association organised an ice cream van to come. As you can see from the pictures below, it was thoroughly enjoyed!!
