Welcome to St. Brendan’s National School’s Green School page!
For the last number of years, we have been a school who has chosen to take initiative and become part of the Green Schools student - led programme. In joining this programme we have and continue to do our utmost in creating a cleaner, better environment in our schools, homes and community.
The Green Schools Programme involves 7 main themes which schools work through. Each theme takes 2 years to complete and we are so proud to say that we have acquired 3 Green Flags from completing 3 themes!
The themes we have completed are as follows;
Litter and Waste
This theme was our very first theme and one that every single child and adult could part-take in on a daily basis. We learned about recycling and what we can/can’t recycle – a habit that we have gotten better at over the years even! This theme allowed us to realise that we are all responsible for waste and litter and that doing our small part can make a big difference.
Energy
This theme saw us look at all the ways in which we could reduce our energy consumption in the school and at home. We learned how to save electricity and be smart about the electricity that we do use. We also helped raise awareness around the topic of climate change, which is still so important today.
Water
This theme saw us develop a huge awareness around water – where our water comes from and what we do with it, but more importantly we looked into where we were wasting water and the ways we could do more to conserve our water.
Travel
This is the newest flag that we achieved last year. In doing this flag we made a trip to Dublin to attend the Big Travel Challenge Awards where we became one of only three Cycling Schools of the Year! It is such an achievement that we are very proud of. The theme of travel had us all out and moving throughout the 2 year cycle of the travel flag. We learned about idling, how to make our school environment have cleaner air and also introduced Walk on Wednesday. This flag taught us we don't just have to drive to school!
